Historigraph

A new form of data visualization PLUS a new app

A map of space-time

Historigraph uses topology and the fundamental principles of data visualization to fit both space and time on a single graph. This lets you see history itself.

Above is a graph of American presidential elections with an overlay of the seven "party systems". Click the image to enlarge.

As you can see, there are clear patterns visible. That's because it is not merely a list of states in heatmap form. The states have been ordered in such a way as to reflect their positions in 2D space. If that sounds interesting, keep reading.

How does the Historigraph work?

This is a heatmap of all 50 states, in alphabetical order. It's chaos.

See the difference

This historigraph of the COVID pandemic in America shows the power of visualizing changes in space over time. It shows the journalistic potential of the format.

VideoShops.com

XenBuild's visualization system enabled me to get VideoShops unstuck. The company had technology but no product. XenBuild speed up the process of revealing the gaps, and then planning a pivot. It played a key role in the company's successful second round of funding and launch.

Another example

This graphic tells a compelling story by using US census data, applying spatial ordering, and then adding a secondary color coding to orient the viewer.

I'm building a Historigraph app

And you can try it out. It is still in alpha. In the future, you will be able to create your own historigraphs with a large library of data sets.
