Modern Construction Services
Building a digital construction document platform

Background

MCS is a Seattle-based construction consulting form offering services such as building information modeling (BIM) and virtual construction services (VCS).

The need

MCS wanted to further digitize their operations. As a digital BIM/VCS company the use of physical documents such as blueprints and shop drawings hindered the workflow. They wanted an internal software tool to manage digital copies of physical documents.

The solution

I embedded with their team in order to study their workflows. It was clear that the staff wanted to maintain continuity and a piece of software that got in the way instead of facilitating the work would not be used. Accordingly, I sought to recreate the physical work environment in a digital milieu. Digital and physical documents each have advantages, and the priority was to have the advantages of both rather than the disadvantages. To accomplish this, I applied concurrent research from major corporations with similar document management needs (such as Boeing).

Results

In trials, the software solution saw a 45% increase in workflow efficiency
